Calculate sale prices and savings

A discount reduces an original price by a percentage or fixed amount. Sales tax, if applicable, may then be added according to local rules.

Calculation method

Discount amount = original price × discount rate / 100. Sale price before tax = original price − discount amount.

Worked example

An $80 item with a 25% discount saves $20 and costs $60 before any sales tax.

What your result means

Two consecutive discounts of 20% and 10% equal a 28% total reduction, not 30%, because the second percentage applies to the already discounted price.

Tips for better calculations

Use the final price—including tax and delivery—to compare competing promotions.

Assumptions and limitations

Sales-tax rules and which amount is taxable depend on location and promotion type. Shipping costs and coupon restrictions are not included.
