Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions
Fractions express a part of a whole. Work in numerator and denominator form when exact answers matter.
Calculation method
For a/b + c/d, use (ad + bc) / bd. For multiplication, use ac/bd. To divide a/b by c/d, multiply a/b × d/c.
Worked example
One half plus one quarter equals 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4. Three quarters is 0.75 in decimal notation.

Simplify the resulting fraction by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
Tips for better calculations
Enter negative signs on numerators rather than denominators when convenient; both representations describe the same value.
Assumptions and limitations
Denominators cannot be zero. Dividing by a zero-valued fraction is also undefined. Large integer products may exceed safe numeric precision in some browsers.
