Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin conversion

Temperature scales differ in both their zero points and, sometimes, degree sizes. Unlike simple distance conversion, most temperature conversions need an offset.

Calculation method

C = (F − 32) × 5/9; F = C × 9/5 + 32; K = C + 273.15.

Worked example

68°F = 20°C = 293.15 K.

What your result means

A temperature difference of 1°C equals a difference of 1 K, but absolute Celsius and Kelvin readings are offset by 273.15.

Tips for better calculations

For cooking, verify whether the oven uses Fahrenheit or Celsius before setting the temperature.

Assumptions and limitations

Kelvin temperatures below 0 K are outside ordinary thermodynamic temperature definitions. Check whether you are converting absolute temperatures or temperature differences.
