Understand reference-weight formulas

So-called “ideal weight” formulas provide historical reference values, not a universally healthy target for every adult.

Calculation method

One adult reference formula (Devine) begins with 50 kg for men or 45.5 kg for women at 5 ft, plus 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft.

Worked example

For a 5 ft 10 in male using the Devine formula: 50 + 2.3 × 10 = 73 kg.

What your result means

A formula-based estimate is not a personal diagnosis. Frame size, muscle mass, age, health conditions and body composition can make a single number misleading.

Tips for better calculations

If you need a general screening value, use BMI alongside professional guidance rather than assuming this number is a health goal.

Assumptions and limitations

The Devine formula originated for medical dosing estimates and should not be treated as a clinical weight-loss recommendation, especially for children or pregnancy.
