Weighted grade-point averages and grading scales
A grade point average weights each course’s grade points by the number of credits it contributes. School-specific grade conversion rules must be applied before entering values.
Calculation method
Worked example
One 3-credit course at 4.0 and one 4-credit course at 3.0 produce (12 + 12) ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43 GPA.
What your result means
An unweighted 4.0 GPA usually treats A as 4.0 and B as 3.0. Weighted scales may assign additional points to honors, AP or IB courses.
Tips for better calculations
Convert letters using your school’s official scale and enter correct credits. If a class is pass/fail or excluded from GPA, do not include its credits in the calculation.
Assumptions and limitations
This tool accepts grade points, not letters, and its initial form models three courses. Institutional grading scales, transfer-credit treatment, and rounding policies vary.
