Mean, median, mode and spread

Descriptive statistics summarize how a numerical sample is centered and how values vary.

Calculation method

Mean = Σx / n. Median is the middle sorted value (or average of the two middle values). Range = maximum − minimum. Population standard deviation = √[Σ(x−mean)²/n].

Worked example

For 2, 4, 4 and 6: mean = 4, median = 4, mode = 4, range = 4, and population standard deviation ≈ 1.41.

What your result means

Mean reacts to outliers; median can be more stable for skewed data. Multiple modes are possible when values tie.

Tips for better calculations

Paste numbers separated by commas and remove units or empty entries before calculating.

Assumptions and limitations

Population and sample standard deviation use different denominators (n vs n−1). Check which convention the tool displays before comparing with other software.
