Scientific functions and angle modes

Scientific calculators add trigonometry, logarithms, powers, roots and constants to ordinary arithmetic.

Calculation method

sin, cos and tan use the selected angle mode. In degree mode, sin(30°) = 0.5; in radians, sin(π/6) = 0.5. log usually means base 10, while ln means natural logarithm.

Worked example

Set DEG mode and calculate sin(30) to obtain approximately 0.5. Switching to RAD and typing 30 uses 30 radians instead.

What your result means

Check whether the calculator is in degrees or radians before evaluating trigonometric expressions. The π button represents an approximation of pi.

Tips for better calculations

Use parentheses when chaining operations, and clear the display if an invalid expression produces an error.

Assumptions and limitations

The real logarithm of zero or a negative number is not defined; square root of a negative number requires complex numbers, which may not be supported.
