Area of a triangle from base and height

The area of a triangle is half the area of a rectangle with the same base and perpendicular height.

Calculation method

Triangle area = (base × perpendicular height) ÷ 2.

Worked example

A triangle with a 10 cm base and 6 cm perpendicular height has an area of 30 cm².

What your result means

The height is measured at 90 degrees from the chosen base to the opposite vertex or its line, not along a sloping side.

Tips for better calculations

Use matching units for both dimensions; otherwise convert before multiplying.

Assumptions and limitations

The formula uses two consistent length units and a nonnegative base and height. If only three side lengths are known, use Heron’s formula instead.
